We are, after all, in a conflict. Thereās a furious competition for our time and attention. As I see nine decades on my personal horizon, I look over my shoulder and see nearly as many decades where Iāve directed my attention to answering these questions. Iāve been pursuing truth. Along the way Iāve documented my observations. Many of these insights you now hold in your hand. If the con-tent from chapter to chapter seems a little disjointed, itās because itās been taken, more or less in sequence, from a website where the content isnāt intended to be consumed in such a linear fashion as a book. In a sense, it was stream-of-consciousness as I documented what was on my mind.
The internet feels rather ethereal and transitory, and I wanted to preserve these essays on old-fashioned cellulose, stamped in ink so someone could put it on a bookshelf after devouring the ideas.
